Joan Kay Hall was born November 3, 1936 in Plover, Iowa the daughter of Cecil A. and Neva (Shoemaker) Twigg. She was the second of four children and the siblings remained very close through their lives.

Joan was raised in the Plover area where she graduated from high school. She then attended Capital City Community College in Des Moines, Iowa. Joan met Max Hall while the two were working at the same accounting firm in Des Moines. She was united in marriage to Max Dean Hall in Plover, Iowa on February 23, 1958. The couple lived in Des Moines, Cookeville, Tennessee and Orlando, Florida before moving to Knoxville, Iowa in 1965. Joan and Max ran the lunch counter at Baker Drug and a Dairy Sweet in Knoxville for several years before opening Hall’s Tax Service. The couple worked side by side in the tax and bookkeeping service until their retirement in 1995. Max passed away in 2014. Joan moved to Florida with her daughter, Margie in 2021.

Joan was very active in the Knoxville community. She served on the Knoxville Senior Citizens Center board of directors and was the organization’s bookkeeper for many years. She also delivered meals-on-wheels for over 20 years. Joan was also a longtime member of noon Kiwanis and the New Covenant Church of Knoxville. She was a member and volunteer of the Marion County Historical Society and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in June of 2026. In her spare time, Joan loved to eat out, crochet and watch her favorite sports teams, which were the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Cubs. She adored all her family and especially loved spending time with her grand and great-grandchildren.
