Patricia Eileen Greubel

Patricia Eileen Greubel, 73, of Knoxville, Iowa, formerly of Washington, Iowa, died Thursday, September 4, 2025 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, following a lengthy illness. Pat was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her passing.

Born October 1, 1951, Pat was the eldest daughter of Robert and Mary (Ruth) Marek of rural Washington, Iowa. A 1969 graduate from Washington High School, she attended Mercy Nursing School in Iowa City and Burlington Nursing School, and later earned her BSN at Drake University.

Pat was joined in marriage to Frank Greubel in Washington, IA on September 7, 1973. To this union were born three children: Joshua, Joseph, and Jessica. Pat and Frank both worked as nurses at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Knoxville, and later Pat became a Nurse Manager. They divorced in 1999.

Pat will be remembered as a friend, sister, aunt, mother, and grandmother for her warm smile, her sense of humor, her cooking/recipes shared, and her passion for flowers and crafts. She never met a stranger that she couldn’t talk to, or missed finding green and purple items to collect along with her Precious Moments figurines. Pat was an active volunteer. While her children were in school, she was an avid band mom, 4-H leader, Meals on Wheels volunteer, consistent blood donor, and founding member of the Board of Directors for the VA daycare in Knoxville. At St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Pat taught religious education and served as a lector. Her spare time was filled with reading, gardening, canning, and quilting. In retirement Pat was part of the Knoxville Piecemakers Quilt Guild and traveled to Kalona for monthly Quilt Squad meetings. She created quilts and holiday decorations for her children, grandchildren, and others. Pat always had time for her grandchildren’s backyard camping, tree climbing, picnics, “adventures” driving around the Iowa countryside, coloring Easter eggs by the dozens, sharing stories, attending music, dance, and sporting events, and occasionally creating mischief.

Those left to cherish Pat’s memory are son Joshua (Amanda), daughter Jessica, Greubel grandchildren: Alexis (fiance Kaleb), Michael (fiance Lexi), Benen, Ashton, Keely, Nya, and Autumn, her mother Mary, sisters Fran McVeigh and Sherry Marek-Chary (Sudharshan), brothers Gerard Marek (YoungLim) and Wayne Marek, sister-in-law Mary Marek, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Pat was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph; her father Robert; her son Joseph; her daughter-in-law Ashley; and her brother James.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made out to the Pat Greubel 4H/FFA Scholarship. This will be given to a Knoxville High School Senior via the Panther Scholarship Foundation.
