Sherry Kay Haney was born May 28, 1942 in Guthrie County, Iowa the daughter of Glen and Velma (Laughery) Covault.
Sherry attended country school and graduated from Guthrie Center High School. Following high school, Sherry attended Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines. She graduated in 1963 and took a job at the V.A. Medical Center in Knoxville, Iowa. While working at the V.A., she met Ted Haney and the couple were married September 8, 1964 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Knoxville. Sherry worked as a Psych Nurse and eventually led the Day Treatment Center at the V.A. She was a skilled and compassionate nurse and enjoyed working with veterans. She also engaged patients in recreational softball and volleyball as well as an annual week-long fishing trip to Clear Lake each summer. Sherry retired in the early 2000's.
Sherry was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the U.M.W. She taught an adult Sunday School class, served as the district Social Justice Chair, and dedicated countless hours to the Almost Free Shop. Sherry was a member of NARFE and enjoyed her nursing class's annual reunion. Sherry taught aqua size classes at the Knoxville Recreation Center during retirement until March of 2020. She also enjoyed sewing for her family and cross-stitching blankets for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Flower gardening was another pastime she took great pride in. She and Ted loved to dance and play cards; nearly every Saturday night they could be found at a local dance. Sherry met with her cousins from the Guthrie Center area quarterly, ensuring they stayed in touch. Family was truly the epicenter of Sherry's life and she cherished her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings and cousins.
Sherry passed away Sunday, July 5, 2026, at her daughter, Denise's home, in Pleasant Hill, Iowa at the age of 84 years.
In addition to her parents, Sherry was preceded in death by her husband, Ted and sister, Jeanie.
Those left to honor Sherry's memory include her children: Denise (Bernard) Lee and Dennis Haney; grandchildren: Shelby (Tyler) Green, Eric (Hannah) Lee, Jenna (Joe) Miesch, Grace Haney, Adam Lee and Emma Haney; great-grandchildren: Rosalee, Henry and Paul Green, Teddy, Bennett and Anderson Lee; sister, Ardis Torr and many other family members and friends.
